November 2, 2006 - Welcome to the Gypsy Eyes Records website. We are an artist owned record label based in Washington, DC. We're tired of the way the record industry works, tired of the same sounds and are working to bring you new sounds and ideas. So far weïve signed five artists: Shortstack, Revival, Brandon Butler, Vandaveer and Mikal Evans. The last couple of months have been busy with us lining up artists, finalizing distribution and publishing deals and getting records ready for release! Without further ado, here's what's on the way in the coming months:
Shortstack's "The History of Cut Nails in America" is finally seeing release on November 14th!! It is our first release and we couldn't be more excited and we think you will be too. Contrary to popular belief, Shortstack is not from Arlington, they are children of the world and the music comes from their souls to yours. It is a no nonsense sound, the soul of Americana, something that would come out of Sun Studios, circa 1954. Shorstack will be planning a run of tour dates to support the album. Check our tour section for the most up to date info on when you can catch them in your town.
Revival's "Horse of War " will be released in January of 2007. It's a pretty heavy record so watch out. Beautiful melodies mask these deceptively dark stories of life. You have not heard this music before. You should probably have some sort of illicit substance around to help your mind fully appreciate what is happening. Revival will be touring in support of the record, dates to come. If you haven't seen these guys play live yet, you need to check them out.
Brandon Butler's "Lucky Thumbs " is coming out in February of 2007. Brandon, formerly of the late and often lamented Canyon, has been a real treat to work with. He signed with Gypsy Eyes "because I had nothing better to do that day." We got lucky and you get "Lucky Thumbs." Sounds like sipping whiskey on your porch outside Kansas City on a steamy summer evening. A record from the heart of this country and from the heart of Brandon Butler. Beautiful songs for an ugly, cruel world.
Vandaveer hails from the hills of Kentucky and sings songs about murder and heartbreak in the big city. If you like Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, my guess is you will like Vandaveer. His record, "Grace and Speed," comes out in February 2007. Vandaveer will be touring embarking on an extensive tour very soon and will no doubt be coming to a town near you, go and see him. Check the tour page for your latest updates.
Mikal Evans is currently in the studio working on her album which will be released in the Fall of 2007. Mikal is an old fashioned Southern girl who loves her fried chicken and Appalachian roots. Her voice sounds like an angel whispering on your shoulder. Her music feels like a wolf howling at the moon after a fresh kill. It will blow your mind. Where did the girl learn to play like this? Must be something in the water…
One final note, Gypsy Eyes is a small, independent label. If you want to buy our records, buy them from us! Just click on the "Store" link at the top of the page. Otherwise, please go to your local independent record store. These are the folks who keep small labels like us in business. These are the people who keep interesting music alive by selling music they like.
